Before the Adventure Begins: How Special Journeys Prepares to Support Travelers with Down Syndrome

Before the Adventure Begins: How Special Journeys Prepares to Support Travelers with Down Syndrome

A great vacation starts long before the bags are packed.
For families and caregivers of adults with Down syndrome, choosing a group vacation can come with plenty of excitement and questions. Who will be supporting my loved one? Will the team understand their individual needs? How will medications, meals, spending money, and daily routines be handled? Will they have opportunities to make their own choices and enjoy the trip independently?
At Special Journeys, preparation starts with getting to know the traveler.
Having Down syndrome does not tell us everything we need to know about a person. Every traveler brings different abilities, interests, preferences, personalities, routines, and support needs.
That is why Special Journeys does not simply prepare for a diagnosis. We prepare for the person.

Getting to Know the Traveler Before the Trip

Before departure, Special Journeys gathers information that helps the team understand each traveler’s individual needs.

This includes learning about:

  1. Their abilities and level of independence.
  2. Their interests and favorite activities.
  3. Their individual preferences.
  4. Their daily routines.
  5. Areas where they may need additional assistance.

Special Journeys’ philosophy emphasizes avoiding assumptions about a traveler’s abilities and recognizing each person’s unique strengths and interests. Travelers are treated as equals, and their choices and autonomy are respected throughout the experience.

For a traveler with Down syndrome, this means support is based on the individual, not assumptions about their diagnosis.

Understanding Individual Support Needs

Some travelers may be comfortable completing many daily activities independently. Others may need more assistance throughout the day.

Before the trip, Special Journeys works to understand what level of support each traveler may need.

Depending on the individual, that could include assistance with:

  1. Medications.
  2. Meals.
  3. Luggage and hotel routines.
  4. Restroom prompting.
  5. Shopping and spending money.
  6. Mobility.
  7. Other daily activities and personal needs.

Special Journeys provides individualized support based on each traveler’s needs, with Travel Companions assisting with many daily activities and Tour Leaders and other designated team members handling additional responsibilities throughout the trip.

The goal is to provide the support a traveler needs while still encouraging opportunities for independence.

Preparing for Meals and Dietary Needs

Meals are a big part of any vacation, and they are also an opportunity for travelers to make choices and socialize with friends.

Before the trip, Special Journeys gathers information about:

  1. Food allergies.
  2. Food intolerances.
  3. Likes and dislikes.
  4. Portion-control needs.
  5. Other food-related considerations.

When needed, the Special Journeys team can provide assistance with ordering, food-related needs, and other mealtime support based on the individual traveler.

This allows support to be available when needed while still giving travelers opportunities to participate in their own choices.

Creating a Comfortable Group Experience

Travel is about more than seeing a new destination. For many Special Journeys travelers, the friendships and social experiences become some of the best parts of the vacation.

Special Journeys prepares for the group experience by considering details such as:

  1. Small-group support from Travel Companions.
  2. Overall trip coordination from Tour Leaders.
  3. Hotel accommodations and individual beds.
  4. Roommate compatibility.
  5. Roommate requests made in advance.

Travel Companions typically support small groups of travelers, while Tour Leaders coordinate the overall trip. Hotel arrangements are also thoughtfully considered, including roommate compatibility and requests.

These details help create an environment where travelers can spend time with others, build friendships, and enjoy being part of the group.

Balancing Support With Independence

Providing support does not mean doing everything for someone.

One of the important parts of a Special Journeys vacation is giving travelers opportunities to experience independence while knowing support is available when they need it.

That might look like:

  1. Choosing what to order at dinner.
  2. Deciding what souvenir to buy.
  3. Spending time with new friends.
  4. Participating in a favorite activity.
  5. Speaking up about a preference.
  6. Asking for assistance when needed.

Special Journeys’ approach is rooted in respect, honor, dignity, and love. It includes respecting travelers’ choices and autonomy and recognizing what each person is capable of doing.

The right level of support looks different for every traveler, and that individuality matters.

Preparing for the Fun, Too

Behind-the-scenes preparation is important, but the purpose of all that planning is simple.

We want travelers to have a great vacation.

Special Journeys trips give adults with developmental and physical disabilities opportunities to:

  1. Experience new destinations.
  2. Participate in fun activities.
  3. Meet new people.
  4. Spend time with friends.
  5. Make their own choices.
  6. Create memories they can bring home.

The preparation allows the adventure to take center stage.

We Prepare for the Person, Not the Diagnosis

No two adults with Down syndrome are exactly alike.

They have different personalities, interests, strengths, preferences, levels of independence, and support needs.

That is why preparation at Special Journeys begins with the individual.

By learning about each traveler before departure and understanding where support may be needed, our team can prepare for an experience that balances care with choice, independence, friendship, and fun.

Because a Special Journeys vacation is not about defining someone by what support they need.

It is about helping them experience everything an adventure can offer.
