Adventure with Special Journeys to the exciting city of St. Louis!
Our first stop takes us to the sea! Ok, maybe not the actual sea, but it will certainly feel like we're there, when we walk into the 120,000 square-foot St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station. We will first navigate the Confluence Gallery where we will see fish, crappie and other water animals that call the local Mississippi and Missouri Riverways home. We will then learn about other animals that call global rivers home, such as the riverways of Africa, South America and Asia. And as you can imagine, we'll see some interesting looking 'river monsters', such as the giant arowana which can grow up to 3 feet long and 10 pounds, or the vicious piranha of South America. The next exhibit brings us to the Ocean Shore, where we have an interactive experience where we are able to touch horseshoe crabs, sea cucumbers, and stingrays. We promise, no piranhas will be in these tanks! Once we've enjoyed the exhibit, we'll delve into the Shark Canyon, where a 250,000-gallon tank is home to over 80 sharks, surgeonfish, rays and sardines, just to name a few. Then finally we'll see the animals of the deep sea, such as Moon Jelly fish, giant octopus, gulper eels, and the magnificent Leafy Sea Dragon.
The next day travel just 13 miles south of the city to Grant's Farm. Here we will have time to experience wildlife one-on-one! Named Grant's Farm because Ulysses S. Grant used to work a portion of the land, it is now a 281-acre attraction. This wonderful attraction provides a unique experience of history, heritage and wildlife. The Farm offers a wide range of animals to see and is refuge for more than 900 animals which represent more than 100 species. We will be able to see domestic animals, such as goats and donkeys, to exotic animals like wallabies, elephants, and peacocks. While at the Farm we may also have the opportunity to ride a camel, though we're not sure if it'll have one hump or two! But many visitor's favorite animal that they see while on the Farm are the Budweiser Clydesdale horses. These mighty and majestic horses are typically brown in color with silky feathering on their legs. While they can weigh up to 2,400 pounds, they're typically very gentle and easygoing horses. At Grant's Farm, there are over 50 Clydesdales that vary in age from 6 months to 15 years old, while we may not be able to see all 50, it will certainly be a treat to see these spectacular horses in their impressive stables. We'll have the opportunity to feed animals too, just make sure you stay away from the goats, they'll try almost anything to see if it's good to eat, even the shirt off your back!
Our final adventure of this St. Louis trip brings us to Anheuser-Busch where we tour this historic brewery site. Nestled in the Soulard neighborhood of the city, the brewery is the oldest site of Anheuser-Busch. The site was selected due to its access to the Mississippi River and large presence of the German immigrants in the 1800s. Additionally, this site also contained natural cave formations that were used to store the beer prior to the invention of refrigerators. It is a wonderful experience to walk through the building and to be transported in time where we learn about one of the oldest and largest breweries in the nation.
