What do farm animals and a hot air balloon have in common? You might not think they have much, but a rooster, a duck, and a sheep were the first ever passengers on a hot air balloon in 1783! Travel with us to learn more about hot air balloons and see them fly through the air amongst the backdrop of the Smoky Mountains.
On this Special Journeys tour, we will begin our trip by arriving in White Pine, Tennessee which is the location of the Lakeside of the Smokies Balloon Fest. This time of year is particularly wonderful in the Mountains, since the leaves start to turn which will give us a beautiful background to watch the hot air balloons drift in the sky.
Our first day we will explore the Balloonfest. Here we will get to see hot air balloons up close. There are many different styles and sizes of balloons, some that are classically shaped and some mimicking characters such as Tweetie Bird, and Smoky the Bear. But we won't know exactly what we'll see until we get there! As we walk around the balloon baskets, you'll have the opportunity to meet the pilots and ask questions about their balloons. You can also collect pilot trading cards from the different pilots, which are a fun souvenir to bring home.
After we walk around, we'll sit back and enjoy some of the 6 different bands and entertainers that the Festival has planned. While we watch the bands and the hot air balloons take off into the sky, we'll be sure to enjoy some delicious foods. Parked at the Festival will be 20 different food trucks. From seafood, 'Hawg Dogs' which are bacon-wrapped hot dogs, to chimney cakes, and chicken n' waffles, we surely will find something for everyone will like!
The next day we will enjoy more of the Balloonfest before heading over to Dollywood. Tennessee is Dolly Parton country after all! As the sun starts to set Dollywood has carved thousands of jack-o-lanterns that they light which sets the park aglow. We'll walk around the park and see larger-than-life pumpkin displays. There's 40-foot tall pumpkin tree which is the centerpiece of the Dollywood Pumpkin Glow, 'critters' on lily pads, and a crop of sunflowers, and of course a large guitar and music notes… all out of carved pumpkins! Plus, there are lots of delicious fall-themed treats to enjoy as we make our way around the park.
Our final day before making our way back home will include some shopping! We'll explore some local shops to find a souvenir to commemorate our fun trip.
